SOME AFRICAN WISE SAYINGS AND THEIR MEANING

1. The dirtiness of a pig does not stop it from being eating
Meaning: what even that is going to die will surely die.

2. A tree that does not know how to dance will be taught by the wind.
Meaning: it is your conditions that determine how you live.

3. Until death does the tortoise apart, the tortoise shell will ever remain with the tortoise.
Meaning: despite human and animal dies yet God has created something to last long.

4. The tortoise shell is not a threat to the gorilla.
Meaning: a victim cannot intimidate a victor.

5. If the antelope knew that the slow movement of the tiger was not a way of escape for him, he would not have tempered the tiger's territory.
Meaning: ignorance kills.

6. The cow becomes the goat when she starts feeding on yam instead of grasses.
Meaning: when you bring yourself down people will look down on you.

7. No matter how big a tree is, it must surely bow to the wind when it passes by.
Meaning: no man has power over death.

7. The wood picker can pick all woods but cannot pick stones.
Meaning: every man's power has limit.

8. The dictionary has a meaning in a dictionary.
Meaning: what you know is far greater than what you know about yourself; hence develop your gift or talent for expansion.

Meaning: there is a reason for everything.

10. The monkey that wants to see the hunters face will one day receive its own bullet.
Meaning: avoid danger when you sense it because it is no man's friend.

11. He who does not want noise while preparing his food should learn not to buy foodstuff on credit.
Meaning: if you don't like troubles avoid what ever will bring you trouble.

12. It is ignorance that makes the cow thinks he can become an elephant.
Meaning: foolishness is not wisdom.

13. It is not a white goat an old man carried which has made his head gray.
Meaning: a man does not become what he is by nature, but by God.

14. The jumping of the chimpanzee from tree to tree does not make it to become the monkey.
Meaning: a copier cannot be an originator.

15. If the sun claims it have power over the moon, let it come and shine at night.
Meaning: do not boast of what you cannot do - back your word with action.

16. If you want to eat a lion you have to set a trap with a goat.
Meaning: for you to achieve success you must sacrifice a lot (risk should be taken)

17. When you see a cat in calculative motion, you should know that there is a rat at the corner.
Meaning: patience and confidence brings great reward. When someone starts behaving strange, he has a plan.

18. You cannot shape an amoeba.
Meaning: the child that wants to spoil must surely spoil.

19. The chameleon believes so much in unity that is why it changes to any color in its surrounding.
Meaning: unity is strength. For you to associate with other you have to follow their rules.

20. When cats are holding their meeting the rat does no go there.
Meaning: taking risks that can kill a man is very bad.

21. The antelope that ventured into the lion's den would not live to tell the story of what transpired.
Meaning: as a man you have to know your capability and limitation.

22. It is only a poor man that says, "Tilapia is more proteinous than meat."
Meaning: poverty is a curse.

23. The footprint of an elephant and that of a man is not the same.
Meaning: all fingers are not equal.

24. When you see a lion laughing with an antelope, be careful.
Meaning: something may appear pleasant but destructive.

25. It is a greedy man that offloads his barns at once.
Meaning: no hurry in life.

26. The sluggishness of a camel is not laziness but gentility.
Meaning: pride is loss, humility is gain.

Meaning: quietness is not foolishness.

Meaning: it is easy to make promises but difficult to fulfill.

Meaning: any man who wants to rob another of his peace will not have peace.

Meaning: you are equal to your problems.

34. Advice is the second mother to a child.
Meaning: you need good advice to be successful.

35. The native doctor that causes the rain to fall should not fear the thunderstorms that follow.
Meaning: anyone who causes troubles must be prepared to face the consequences.

36. It is only the eggs that are well incubated that can bring forth-young birds.
Meaning: it is the way you make your bed that you lie on it.

37. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.
Meaning: the most successful person might have passed through thorns (tough times).

38. When the rain falls on the leopard it does not wash off his spots.
Meaning: the fact that one is in problem does not stop him from doing what he supposed to do.
39. The venom of the viper does nothing to the back of the tortoise.
Meaning: the inferior cannot outweigh the superior.

40. A bush does not sway unless there is wind.
Meaning: things happen with reasons.

41. An animal that was once caught by the trap sees a bent stick and take to his heels.
Meaning: one who has experienced a downfall (or something bad) will try to avoid similar experience.

42. Kola-nut lasts long in the mouth that knows the value.
Meaning: wealth stays with those who know the value.

43. To give the blind a mirror is a mockery of his physical incapability.
Meaning: don't give gift to a person who doesn't know the value.

44. A cow does not know the value of his tail until it is cut off.
Meaning: the value of something is known when it is not available.

45. If it were all well up in the tree, the hawk would not have come down to look for chicken.
Meaning: there is no place on earth where all is perfectly well.

46. When two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers.
Meaning: when those in power are at war within themselves, those under their power suffer.

47. A man who eats a single egg never knew he has consumed a chicken.
Meaning: some people never consider the gravity of their evil doings at the initial stage until it causes serious damage.

48. The old age of Methuselah has nothing to do with the Wisdom of Solomon.
Meaning: age does not determine maturity.

49. He who sees a rabbit running need not retrieve and pursue a rat.
Meaning: aim for the best not inferior.

50. When your hand fails to work remember the Baboon that breaks kernels with his anus.
Meaning: it is only fools that say there is no solution to problems.
